Nickles sets record at Fostoria Regional
FOSTORIA — Columbus Grove’s Heath Nickles set a new Fostoria Division III Regional Track and Field record in the pole vault Wednesday afternoon, vaulting 15-7 in winning the event by almost two feet over his nearest competitor.
Nickles broke the old mark by seven inches and, in the process, qualified for the state meet. The old record had been set by Shane Shockey, who vaulted 15 feet in last year’s regionals. Nickles’ nearest rival this year was Van Buren’s Dusty Spangler, who was a distant second with a vault of 13-8.
Nickles also set a Columbus Grove mark in the 110-meter high hurdles with a time of 14.8 and was the fastest qualifier in the 300-meter hurdles at 39.8. Nickles has punched his ticket in one event and will see how he will do in the hurdles races Friday evening.
Nickles’ performance Wednesday aided his Bulldogs to claim a tie for first place in the boys standings with Delta with 20 points. Spencerville’s Bearcats are the only other area tracksters to score in those standings with four markers.
In the girls competition, Liberty-Benton’s Lady Eagles continued their strong spring and are leading with 16 points, while Lincolnview is tied for seventh with Patrick Henry and Wynford, with six points each.
The Bearcats’ Pete McCollow finished fifth in the pole vault to earn those points for Spencerville’s boys. He vaulted 13-4 but lost to Margaretta’s Kurtis Kuns in the jump-off to see who would qualify for the state meet.
“I was disappointed but I’ve got two more years,” McCollow commented.
McCollow was also part of the Bearcats’ 4×400-meter relay squad (with senior Pat Holmes, junior Matt Hook and sophomore Drew Ring) who took second in the preliminary race with a time of 3:31.34 and will be in Friday’s finals.
“We survived,” McCollow commented. “We’re going to make that happen in the 4×400. The team hasn’t had a strong showing.”
Columbus Grove’s girls 4×200-meter relay (senior Jamie Scott, sophomore Ella Diller, senior Amanda Schroeder and junior Jaimie Lewis) clocked a 1:46.74 to grab first in their heat and advance.
As well, its 4×100-meter girls squad (Scott, senior Aubrie Stechschulte, Diller and Schroeder) finished second in the second heat of the day and qualified for Friday’s finals with a time of 51.17.
“We’re pleased,” Lady Bulldog Amanda Schroeder noted. “We’re happy with our lane. It looked like we were ahead but we weren’t.”
Fort Jennings’ freshman Katie Von Lehmden competed in the 400-meter dash preliminaries but did not qualify for the finals, finishing sixth (63.32).
“It was one of my best,” Von Lehmden commented. “It’s a chance to see everyone else. I’ll have to see how the other heat does to see if I made it.”
However, Lewis qualified for the finals in that event, with a time of 59 seconds. Freshman teammate Paige Heffner (63.22) did not.
Musketeer Brad Bruskotter made it into the 400-meter dash finals with a time of 52.21 and will be in the eighth lane in the finals.
“I got fourth in my heat (first heat),” Bruskotter commented. “I thought I beat the guy in the other lane beside me (Curtis Smithey of Bloomdale Elmwood, who was in lane 4 in the first heat and had a time of 50.54 to Bruskotter’s 52.21; Bruskotter was in lane 5). I thought I got him.”
Lincolnview track coach Matt Langdon noted that his teams did well Wednesday.
“Our girls 4×800 team took third,” Langdon stated. “Sarah Korte had her best time in the 300-meter hurdles. All the girls had PRs (personal bests) today.”
The Lady Lancers’ 4-by-800-meter relay squad, comprised of Jordon Reynolds, Kylie Honigford, Brittany Katalenas and Katie Honigford, finished with a time of 9:54.15 and qualified for state.
Columbus Grove’s ladies’ 4×400-meter relayers (Schroeder, Heffner, Diller and Lewis) qualified for the finals Friday with a time of 4:08.37.
“”We were second in our heat,” Diller commented. “The heat was super fast; it was really fast. There was good competition. We were definitely pushed. Jaimie Lewis did it for us.”
“Our two middle runners (Diller and Hefner) knew that we were tired,” Schroeder commented. “We were third coming in.”
CG’s Cory Mueleman won the discus with a toss of 164-6, qualifying the 2006 state champion for this year’s state meet.
Stechschulte qualified in the 100-meter dash finals with a time of 12.87.
