Keller stellar for Spencerville softballers
SPENCERVILLE — Spencerville junior pitcher Haley Keller has been a leader for the Lady Bearcats for three seasons.
She was even more so on a windy and dusty Tuesday afternoon versus Allen East, striking out 10, allowing no bases-on-balls and a mere two hits in the Lady Bearcats’ 7-2 elimination of the Lady Mustangs in the Spencerville Division III district softball semifinals.
The Lady Bearcats will travel to Wapakoneta for a 5 p.m. Thursday district final matchup with the Lady Cardinals of New Bremen (who whitewashed St. Henry 4-0 Tuesday).
“It will be a tough matchup,” Spencerville coach Jim Kuhn stated. “Haley did an excellent job of pitching. She’s pitched as well as she did as when I’ve been here. She pitched as well as she did in the sectional finals.”
The Lady Bearcats got the go-ahead tally in the fourth frame. Tricia Fuge singled, pilfered second, took third on a Kelly Gossard passed ball and scored on a Katlin Kuhn sacrifice fly.
Spencerville broke the tilt open in the sixth. Fuge coaxed a full-count base-on-balls, took second on a Keller sacrifice, went to third on an error by shortstop Nikki Clinger when Brooke Moeller was at bat and scored when Gossard’s pickoff attempt sailed into left. Moeller ended up at third on the sequence and stole home. Audrey Hobbs walked, stole second, took third on a Caitlin Klima single and scored when Gossard tried to pick Hobbs off third, with the same result as before.
Allen East got one back in the bottom of the sixth. With one down, Jesse Elsass singled to right field and came home on an error by shortstop Hobbs when Tabitha Drury was at the bat.
“The ladies played a good game on defense, except for one flaw in the sixth inning,” Kuhn noted.
The Lady Bearcats (9-12) got two insurance tallies in the seventh. Amanda Warnecke tripled to right and scored on a single by Hayden Fast. Dana Sawmiller pinch-ran for Fast and went to second on Fuge’s single. Gossard tried to pick off Fuge at second and that allowed Sawmiller to romp home easily.
The Lady Mustangs (11-11) got on the board first in the first. Ashley Conkle singled, stole second and third and came home on a Kirsten Cox passed ball.
Spencerville knotted the contest up in the second with two gone. Hobbs singled, took second on a Lindsey Wyss wild offering and came around to score on a miscue by first baseman Elsass.
“We got some key hits,” Kuhn commented. “We hit the ball. Plus, Allen East has a young team.”
