Joseph twirls 5-hit shutout at Bearcats
SPENCERVILLE — Damon Joseph pitched a 5-hit whitewashing of the Spencerville Bearcats as the Jefferson Wildcats shut out their hosts 6-0 at Matt Wilkin Field in Spencerville for a Northwest Conference triumph Monday afternoon.
Joseph was a model of efficiency; the Wildcat lefthander hurled 88 pitches in the complete-game win and struck out six, while hitting one and walking none.
“I’m proud of him,” Jefferson coach Troy Montenery commented. “He threw 88 pitches and he was very efficient.”
The Wildcats won their 10th victory of the season in 18 attempts (4-5 in the NWC), which doubles their 2006 win total (five).
“Any time you can get double-digit wins in a season, it’s great,” Montenery noted. “I’m proud of the way we played together.”
Joseph was helped by the ’Cats scoring three times in the first inning, when Aaron Schuerman reached on an error by shortstop Reggie Wiechart. Schuerman pilfered both second and third base. One out later, Josh Miller was plunked by an errant Troy Keysor offering and stole second. Sean Fisher’s single to right field drove Schuerman in. Joseph then singled to left field, brining in Miller and Fisher.
“We scored early in the first,” Montenery noted.
Joseph doubled to center to start the fourth frame, advanced to third on a Chris Wilkin sacrifice and came home on a Jordan Jettinghoff RBI single.
Spencerville missed a chance to score in the bottom of the fourth inning. Matt Miehls singled and took second when Joseph uncorked a wild pitch. A sacrifice by Damon Koverman sent Miehls to third. Joseph, however, retired Chris Broecker to get out of the inning.
The guests scored their final two tallies in the fifth frame. Schuerman got aboard but was forced by Cory Bastian. Miller singled, as did Fisher; Bastian scored when he slid under the tag at home plate by catcher Broecker. Fisher’s single to left knocked in Miller.
Kip Martz led off the Bearcat sixth by being hit by a pitch. However, he strayed off first and was caught in a rundown.
With one gone in the hosts’ seventh, Koverman doubled. However, Joseph retired both Broecker and Keysor to preserve the shutout.
“We could have hit better,” Spencerville coach Bill Wisher commented. “We hit the ball at someone. Errors are not helping us win games. We had five errors today. Five hits doesn’t do it, either. We have to play the game consistently.”
Keysor pitched a good game for the hosts, going the distance, striking out four, hitting one and not allowing a base-on-balls, but allowing six runs (5 earned) on seven hits.
“Tyler’s pretty consistent for us,” Wisher concluded.
Spencerville slips to 6-12 (2-6 in the NWC) and will travel to Holy Name Field in Kalida to do battle with the Wildcats of Kalida at 5 p.m. today.
“Spencerville has a quality baseball team,” Montenery concluded.
Jefferson will host the Fort Jennings Musketeers at 5 p.m. Wednesday.
