One Year Ago
• Passage of replacement levies in both Van Wert and Allen counties ensures Delphos Senior Citizens Center will be able to continue serving the needs of local elderly residents. Seventy percent of the center’s budget comes from levy money, which passed by 67 percent in Van Wert County and 66 percent in Allen County.

25 Years Ago — 1982
• Delphos high school students recently received notice of scholastic honors. St. John’s High School juniors Joe Niedecken and Carol Kleman scored in the top 50,000 of more than one million students who took the 1982 PSAT-NMSQT test. Niedecken and Karen Guthrie of Jefferson High School were nominated by their schools for a Bowling Green State University scholarship.
• Joseph Nartker of Delphos, who will soon be 90, is not your typical nonogenarian. His eyesight and hearing are sharp as is his keen sense of humor and quickness. Joe was born May 5, 1892, to Theodore and Mary Nartker on a farm in Glandorf. On Oct. 24, 1914, he married Lena Kahle and they moved in 1939 to a farm on State Route 66 outside of Delphos. Joe is proud of his family and boasts of 24 grandchildren and 29 great-grandchildren.
• Linda Macwhinney recently hosted a party for Phi Delta Sorority. She was assisted by Ellen Suever and Sue Trentman. Plans were finalized for a “Rock-a-thon” to be held May 8 at Lehmann’s Store. Proceeds will be used to buy shoes and boots for needy children of Delphos.

50 Years Ago — 1957
• The battles of the sexes moves into the teenage bracket in Delphos this weekend as 31 Delphos and area youth attempt to answer the eternal question of which is the better driver, the male or female. The drivers will compete in the annual Delphos Jaycees sponsored Teenage Road-e-o to be held Sunday afternoon on the Pangles Market parking lot. The Jaycees will set-up an obstacle driving course. The winner will receive a $25 award and a trip to the state contest. Second place gets $15 and third place $10, provided by Sohio, co-sponsor of the Road-e-o with the Jaycees.
• A musical revue entitled “Melody Parade” will be presented by the music department of Ottoville Schools in the new auditorium-gym at 2 p.m. May 5. The program will consist of songs and drills by the first four grades. Grade five will present cowboy and western music and grade six will present Mexican music in the “South of the Border” theme which will include songs and dances in costumes.
• The local American Legion Auxiliary will conduct the “Save the Children’s Federation” clothing campaign this Friday and Saturday in the Legion club rooms on State Street. This is the first year that the local Legion Auxiliary has joined in the nationwide campaign, which is in its 26th year of service to needy children and their families. Donations will provide children and their families with badly needed clothing and a gift of hope where disaster or poverty have struck.

75 Years Ago — 1932
• A meeting for the purpose of considering organizing a city baseball team to represent Delphos during the coming season will be held at city hall Wednesday night of this week. Plans for the organization of such a team were announced last week, the intention being to use the “Odd Sox” team of last year as a nucleus for the new organization. All of the local young men who are interested in the team and would try for a place on it are invited to attend the meeting set for Wednesday night.
• The Jefferson High School music department has received an invitation to broadcast over station WOWO at Fort Wayne. The exact date has not been set. Chorus numbers which were sung at the district eisteddfod recently held in this city, in which Delphos High was victorious, will likely be sung.
• The members of the Delphos tennis association are asking that persons passing through Waterworks Park be careful not to walk or ride over the tennis courts. The members of the association were busy last week placing the courts in good condition for play. Following the rain on Saturday, some persons walked over the courts and a bicycle was also ridden over them. It is urged that persons passing through the park take some other route as walking over the courts will damage them.
