Lancers fall short against state-ranked Bulldogs

RURAL MIDDLE POINT — The Lincolnview Lancers had state-ranked Ada on the ropes Monday night but couldn’t maintain the lead.
The visiting Bulldogs got a run in the sixth to eke out a 5-4 Northwest Conference victory.
Chris Boyd and Mike Allen hooked up in a pitchers’ duel for three innings before Ada scored the first run in the fourth inning on a hit and two errors.
Allen retired the first nine batters before the Lancers came back with three runs in the bottom of the fourth. Mitchell Ringwald (2 hits), Dan Brincefield (2 hits) and Kory Thatcher all singled and Boyd walked, forcing in Ringwald. The next batter lined into a double play. Roy Salisbury then drove a single to left field, scoring Brincefield and Thatcher, giving the Lancers a 3-1 lead.
The lead quickly evaporated as Ada followed with a single, a walk and a 3-run home run by James Sheldon.
The Lancers again fought back in the bottom half of the inning on singles by Zach Profit and Ringwald, followed by a double by Brincefield.
The Bulldogs (13-2) scored the go-ahead run in the sixth when the leadoff batter reached on an infield error, was sacrificed to second and advanced to third on a single. The runner then came home on Boyd’s balk.

Lincolnview girls down Ada

RURAL MIDDLE POINT — The Lincolnview Lancers played the Ada Bulldogs Monday evening at the Lincolnview Athletic Complex in Northwest Conference softball action.
Kristyn Jones got her seventh victory against four losses with a 5-3 decision. The southpaw Jones gave up only four hits and one walked batter. She struck out five and yielded no earned runs.
Jones, at the plate, helped her cause with two key sacrifices.
In the first inning, Taylor Fries reached on an error. Jones laid down a fine bunt and with no one covering third base, Lancer head coach Brad Doidge waved Fries over to third base. Fries, hustling all the way, beat the throw and scored as the ball bounced away for an early 1-0 lead.
The top of the second inning had the Bulldogs tie the game at 1-all as the Lancer defense surrendered an unearned run.
The Lancers jumped back into the lead in the third inning by scoring three runs. Mollie Venderley led off the inning with a single. Ayla Eley followed with an RBI double to the left-field fence. Eley scored on an infield single off the bat of Fries. Jones reached on a fielder’s choice and scored on a single by Kela Fries to put the Lancers up 4-1.
Lincolnview had some extra-base hits on the evening with Eley’s double and another double by Allison Williams.
The biggest hit on the evening was delivered by Whitney Fries as she drove a 1-0 pitch over the left-centerfield fence that gave the Lancers a 5-1 lead.
Ada closed the scoring out in the sixth inning as the Lancer defense yielded two more unearned runs to make the final score 5-3.
With the victory, Lincolnview moves to 8-5 in all games and 3-2 in NWC action. Ada drops to 6-7 and 2-3.
Lincolnview will travel to St. Henry tonight at 5 p.m. to take on the Lady Redskins in non-conference action.
