Fisher, Miller pitch Jeffcats past Rams

DELPHOS — The sophomore tandem of Sean Fisher and Josh Miller combined for a 6-hitter as they led Jefferson to a 4-1 victory over Upper Scioto Valley Monday afternoon at Wildcat Field.
Fisher (1-0) went four innings of 2-hit, 2-K ball. Miller gave up four hits and one earned run, walking one and striking out three in his three frames. They combined for a mere 85 pitches, 67 for strikes.
“Sean had only thrown once this year before today but it didn’t look like it. He looked really sharp,” Jefferson coach Troy Montenery noted. “Josh also did a great job. I think you are seeing the maturation of a young pitching staff that is giving us quality innings.”
USV got two runners on in the second but Blake Hunt lined out to Derek Rode in right.
Jefferson (8-6) got the only two runs it would need versus the young Rams (1-14) in the bottom half.
Fisher (2-for-2) led off against starter Jake Nelson (0-4) with a ground single to center. Adam Kraning walked. Two outs hence, Mike Rahrig (2-for-2) lined a single to left center to get Fisher home and put Kraning at third, from where he scored on an error off the bat of Rode for a 2-0 advantage.
“We’re just trying to get things right, to work on the details. We weren’t as sharp today as we were last week,” USV coach F.D. Hattery noted. “We are an extremely young team with eight freshmen and five sophomores. We started four freshmen today and have started as many as six. We had prom over the weekend and didn’t do anything for three days because of the kids’ commitments; you could tell. We didn’t get many quality at-bats.”
The Jeffcat got their final two tallies in the fourth. Chris Wilkin legged out an infield hit to deep short. Rahrig lined a single to left. An out later, Aaron Schuerman walked to load the bases. An out later, Miller singled to center, allowing Wilkin and Rahrig to score. A misplay on the play gave Schuerman a chance to score and sent Miller to second; however, he strayed off the bag and was tagged out, with the umpires ruling that this happened before Schuerman touched the dish, leaving the score 4-0.
Mark Nickelson had a 2-out double to center for the Rams in the sixth but Miller whiffed Nick Dyer.
USV got its lone tally in the seventh. Nelson singled to center, followed by a knock to left by Justin Harsh. Two outs later, pinch-hitter James Smith grounded a single into right to score Nelson; the throw home allowed the other runners to advance a base. However, Mike Krummrey bounced back to Miller for the third out.
“We played solid defense tonight, especially Mike at third, Aaron at short and Chris at first. We rely on our defense,” Montenery added. “Coming into this game, we had a staff ERA of 3.63, which is excellent for high school baseball. However, our batting average isn’t so good. We need to rely on the formula of good pitching, strong defense and timely hitting to be successful. That’s what we did tonight.”
Jefferson is at Wayne Trace tonight (5 p.m. start). USV is next scheduled to be in action Saturday at Perry in tournament play.
