Weather calls off Jefferson twinbill

Jefferson’s Megan McElroy slides safely into home as Minster catcher Dana Brandewie tries to tag her Saturday morning. However, the girls softball matchup was postponed due to the weather in the bottom of the first.DELPHOS — In the end, neither the Jefferson Lady Wildcats nor the Lady Wildcats of Minster won the scheduled softball twinbill on the Jefferson softball diamond Saturday morning.
Just the Minster first inning and one out and seven batters of the Jefferson first frame of the first game were able to be played.
The only winner was Mother Nature, who showed her fury. A cold, soggy, heavy rain, accompanied by a couple of thunderbolts that finally made the arbiters suspend the nonconference softball doubleheader, spoiled the day and made for a long bus ride home for the Auglaize County nine and for their fans. It didn’t do much for the Jefferson players and their partisans.
“We’ve been lucky,” a wet Jefferson coach Brad Rostorfer stated. “There have not been a lot of rainouts with this diamond. This only happens if there is rain on the day of the game.”
Minster got one tally in the top of the first. With two outs, Abby Knapke reached on an error by Jefferson third sacker Brooke Apple. Knapke romped home on a 2-bagger by Julie Prenger.
The hosts rallied in the bottom of the first frame. Megan McElroy hustled out an infield single, Torrie Wilson got on via the base-on-balls route and Kayla Miller also walked. Speedsters McElroy and Wilson easily scored one out later on a double by Lindsey Shivley. Miller would score from third on a sacrifice fly to left. Nicole Sargent walked. A wild pitch by Minster hurler Baumer got Shivley on third, from where she scored on a passed ball by catcher Brandewie. Sargent advanced to third on an error by centerfielder Knapke and Shauna Bowers taking first base.
That is when the umpires signaled for a halt in the action.
There was a delay of about 45 minutes, during which time the skies cleared, the two teams did some running in the foul areas alongside the outfields and the players threw the softballs around to keep warmed up. Diamond dust was poured onto the infield and it was raked. It looked as if the first contest was going to be resumed.
However, Mother Nature decreed there would be no more softball played this day in Delphos as a couple of thunderbolts decided the matter.
“There has been no makeup game set,” Rostorfer explained. “That will be up to the athletic directors (Minster’s Thomas Sharp and Jefferson’s David Hoffman). The schedule is compacting.”
Jefferson will host the Lady Lancers of Lincolnview in a Northwest Conference battle at 5 p.m. today.
“We’ll have to get the field ready before the Lincolnview game Monday,” Rostorfer concluded.
