Phi Delta focuses on charity
DELPHOS — Phi Delta Sorority is a group of women in Delphos who meet in one another’s homes on a regular basis from September through May to incorporate well-being and charity throughout the community.
The sorority was formed in 1933 by three women who missed their college sorority friendship; Ila Scott Doepker, Loretta Kerman Smith and Margaret Roberts Hargrove.
By January 1934, the three had recruited other community women to form an organization revolving around charity, friendship and tolerance.
In a Delphos Herald article on Feb. 3, 1934, it was announced: “At a recent meeting held at the home of Mrs. Ted Stallkamp, the Phi Delta Sorority was organized for the purpose of local charity. The following girls are the charter members of the group; Margaret Roberts, Madeline Humphreys, Hortense Metcalfe, Betty Scherger, Martha Stallkamp, Effie Marie Knowlton, Florence Humphreys, Ila Scott, Ladonna Lockhart, Mrs. Ted Stallkamp, Mrs. John Marsh, Sara Veil and Loretta Kerman.”
In November 1934, the sorority decided to focus on a Christmas charity project to purchase shoes for the needy children in Delphos and this tradition continues today. The women donate shoes and boots to children between the ages of 5-12, averaging 130 pairs annually. They also purchase some first-aid items for the nurse’s station in both local schools.
Fundraisers over the years have ranged from dances, style shows, raffles, craft and bake sales and plant sales. In recent years, sorority members have raised monies by Christmas poinsetta sales, chicken BBQ dinners on the Fourth of July and the Skyline Chili Supper.
For those who may be interested in joining Phi Delta Sorority, any of the following members may be contacted; President Becky Spieles, Karen Edelbrock, Tina Grothouse, Avis Birkmeier, Cheri Brinkman, Kathy Buettner, Jeana Burgei, Val Ditto, Teena Ebbeskotte, Megan Fuerst, Patty Gerberick, Laura Hammons, Lori Kramer, Jane Leininger, Lynn Miller, Annette Ralston, Kathy Rose, Kristi Rose, Lisa Staup, Ellen Suever, Jenny Swick, Mandi Wiltsie, Karen Youngpeter and Shifawn Youngpeter.
