Della Rose (Hemker) May, 80, of Medina, formerly of Sandusky, passed away early Thursday evening at her home after battling cancer for the past year.
She was born Oct. 4, 1926, in Perrysburg, to Sylvester Albin and Genevieve Elizabeth (Kroeger) Hemker.
She married James I. “Jim” May, who died in 2002.
Mrs. May was a 1944 graduate of St. Mary’s High School, Sandusky. She had worked as an educational aide at Bogart Elementary for six years, and later in the Medina City School for eight years, retiring in 1987. The most important part in her life was visiting her family and the grandchildren. She was a member of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church of Medina, where she was involved with her husband, Jim, in the Pre-Cana and Couples Ministry; formerly a longtime member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Sandusky, and formerly of Huron St. Peter.
Survivors include sons, Dr. James D. (Marylin) May of Avon, Thomas D. (Huguette) May of Avon, Mass., Dr. Robert A. (Barbara) May of Toledo and Daniel P. (Lisa) May of Philadelphia, Dr. Patrick J. (Patti) May of Bridgewater, N.H.; daughters, Barbara (Richard) Dasch of Medina, Susan (William) May Adams of Kenmare, Ireland; 9 grandchildren, Dr. Noah (Catherine) May, Robert, Julie, Brian, Richard, Adam, Andrew May, Trevor and Tyler Dasch; two great-grandchildren, Claire and Riley May; two brothers, Donald C. Hemker of Sun City, Calif., Thomas A. Hemker of Villa Park, Calif.; sister, Theresa A. (Robert) Sellin of Eugene, OR; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins; brother-in-law, Ralph A. (Eileen) May Jr. of Sandusky; and sister-in-law, Janet (Charlie) Lochotzki of Sandusky.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Daniel Hemker.
Friends may call from 4-8 p.m. today at the David F. Koch Funeral Home, 520 Columbus Avenue, Sandusky.
Prayers will be recited at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 429 Central Ave., Sandusky, the Rev. Philip Feltman officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Sandusky.
