Library to move to old school
FORT JENNINGS — The Fort Jennings Branch Library will soon have a new home.
The library, which has been housed in Memorial Hall on Water Street for the past 20 years, will be moving to the old Fort Jennings High School band room just down the street this spring. The agreement was made between the Putnam District Library and the school.
“The move will allow us to offer more books and space for groups and is handicapped-accessible as well as more modern,” District Library Director Linda Ewing said Wednesday.
Jennings Librarian Carol Meyer, who has performed her duties in Jennings Memorial Hall for the past 17 years, is excited about the move.
“I am hoping the move opens us up to offer more things for the public,” she said. “We would like to have another computer or two and offer classes and the gymnasium, which is attached to the old band room, will allow us to do more things with larger groups.”
The long-time librarian only sees one drawback to the move.
“We will not have any windows in the new facility,” she said. “I think it’s nice to have natural lighting and be able to look out a window to see what’s going on outside.”
Jennings Memorial Hall, built in 1916 and named after Colonel William Jennings, is owned by Jennings Township. Township Trustee Dave Wieging said there are no plans for hall and the township will remain in ownership.
“The old school’s band room is much nicer than the hall, has more parking and better access and will be more economical to heat and cool,” Wieging said. “It’s a good move for everyone.”
