CWU plans World Day of Prayer service
Women and men in more than 170 countries and regions will celebrate World Day of Prayer (WDP) Friday. The prayers will follow the sun across the globe.
WDP Paraguay (2007’s writers) developed the 2008 theme, “United under God’s Tent,” (the Spanish Unidas bajo el manto de Dios translates as “United Under God’s Mantle”) as a way of imagining how God acts. For Abraham and Sarah, God was like a mantle. “United under God’s Tent” is not only God’s promise to us, it is an unmistakable call to action for a fulfilled life for all people.
As part of the World Day of Prayer observance, Delphos Church Women United will hold a prayer service at 1:30 p.m. Friday at St. Peter Lutheran Church.
The Paraguayan committee chose the ñandautí, a classic Paraguayan handcraft based on woven floral patterns connecting by a single thread, as symbol of that unity within diversity.
WDP’s motto is “Informed prayers lead to prayerful action.” Through World Day of Prayer, women and men affirm that prayer and action are inseparable and that both have immeasurable influence. As we begin preparations for WDP 2007, tens of thousands of people are crying out for aid because they have been made homeless by natural disaster and regional conflicts.
In the United States, the first organized day of prayer held nationally was on Feb. 20, 1920.
Now, hundreds of thousands of women (and men, youth and children) from around the world in every region gather to collectively worship on the first Friday in March. World Day of Prayer is supported by sacrificial and benevolent mission offerings given by individuals through these annual services. Each of the 170 countries celebrating World Day of Prayer has an organized country committee of ecumenical women representing many cultures, races and faith traditions. Each country’s committee is responsible for determining the use of the offering as it relates to the theme for each year. Offering grants are made to women’s and children’s groups in each country.
Each year, a different country serves as the writer for the World Day of Prayer worship service.
