Board OKs upgrades to athletic complex

OTTOVILLE — The school board here approved a project by the Big Green Athletic Boosters to install softball and baseball diamonds at the school’s athletic complex Monday evening, pending the group’s approval of the project at its Wednesday meeting.

The boosters will decide if they will secure funding for the diamonds, for which all plans will need to be approved by the school board before construction begins.

The boosters have already given the district $120,000 toward the complex which now includes a state-of-the-art track and practice and play soccer fields. They will vote on Wednesday on estimates for the fields.

The board also officially approved the Alex and Jennie Miller Memorial Scholarship Fund established by Irene Miller in the amount of $25,000. Her niece, Nanette Flynn, made an additional contribution of $1,000, bringing the principal amount of the scholarship to $26,000. The interest will be used for the scholarships which should become available in 2008.

Miller will give a $1,000 scholarship to an Ottoville student in May. A selection committee will choose the recipient. Applications are available in the school guidance office.

Ottoville students performed well at the 45th annual Putnam County Science Fair held Saturday. The students earned 2 perfect, 11 superior, 12 excellent and 3 good ratings.

“We have more excellent and superior ratings than any other school in the county,” board member Bob Weber said.

High School Principal Bill Altenburger agreed.

“We do really well at this. The parents also buy into it. That’s what makes it work,” Altenburger said.

Nine special awards were also given including the Behavioral Science Award to Bridget Miller; Botany Award to Ed Luersman and Sam Beining; the Chemistry Award to Katrina Beining; and the Human Health Award went to Kari Beining. Lynn Beining won the Veterinarian Award and Sarah Luersman the Originality and Creativity Award. Effective Use of the Scientific Method was won by Ashley Hoehn and Cody DeLong.

Elementary students will enjoy “Science Day” with Seimens on Thursday and sixth-graders will travel to Lima to see the Lima Symphony Orchestra. “Safety Man” from the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office will visit on March 19.

Eighth-grade students will be receiving high school math credit for successfully completing Algebra I.

In other business, the board:

• Accepted the resignation of girls soccer coach Rod Stoner;

• Adopted the Ottoville School District Request for Use of School Facilities form as well as the Ottoville Local School’s Guidelines for Use of Facilities provided by NEOLA;

• Thanked Ottoville High School students Leesha Blake, Dean Bendele, Jenna Roney, Katie Eickholt, Chris Rieger, Ali Rieger, Baily Zimmerman, Lee Pohlman and Renee Kerns for participation in the All-County Band and Choir Concert held at Ottoville High School;

    What about the possibility of pulling out of Iraq, letting Iran invade and lose resources fighting their own kind,
    and then come in and mop up the dregs?

    I have heard so many people talking about this that I am sure it comes as no surprise to say that the best way to find jobs in a recession is to investigate jobs on employer websites:

    -employers do not use recruiters in recessions because they cost money
    -job boards are flooded with applicants

    People just do not look for jobs on employer websites. There are thousands of employer websites in most cities and many of the job sit on there for months without applications.

    This is where most of the jobs are and I found this far more effective than other means.

    I started using a research jobs site called Hound that I do not think anyone knows about because it is run by a small company that does not advertise.

    All Hound.com does is show you unadvertised job openings that are not publicly advertised and are located on employer websites.

    Very few people realize that most employers post their job on their own sites and not on job boards like Monster, CareerBuilder, etc. because these sites charge employers up to $500 to post a single job. In my experience (I am getting more interviews that I ever have), your chances of getting interviews and hired are much better when you are applying to jobs that are not advertised that no one knows about.

    I have gotten a ton of interviews through the Hound site. If you are looking for a job I would highly recommend using Hound . What most people do not realize is that most jobs are found on employer websites and not job boards. Hound puts all of the jobs it finds from employer websiste (every Fortune 500, Inc. 500 and other company it can locate) on its site.

    When you start seeing sites advertise themselves a lot that should be a warning sign of sorts because that means that lots of people will start going and applying to the jobs. I really trust Hound because it does not advertise. You can find the site at http://www.hound.com
