Fort Jennings girls overpower Ayersville
FORT JENNINGS — Fort Jennings’ 6-4 senior center Rachel Landwehr was a dominating handful for Ayersville Saturday afternoon, compiling a double-double: 19 markers, 18 boards; despite missing time with foul trouble.
She got a lot of help, with seven other Lady Musketeers scoring at least two points, as they shot down the Lady Pilots 65-54 on The Fort hardwood.
The game was originally slated for last Tuesday but was pushed back due to weather.
Classmate Amber Schuerman also had a double-double: 14 markers (2 treys) and 10 boards. Classmate Erica Metzger and freshman Katie VonLehmden had eight each for the squad (7-10) that canned 25-of-55 shots (4-of-12 beyond the arc) for 45.5 percent.
“Sometimes, Rachel’s going to go for 20-plus points. However, I like it better when we take what the defense is giving us,” Musketeer coach Matt Myerholtz explained. “Our offense starts with her but we’re better off when we get everybody involved, when we’re moving the ball around. The other girls were looking to attack the basket and go at the defense.”
Ayersville (7-8) countered with 37.2 percent shooting — 19-of-51 (7-of-14 downtown) — but netted only 9-of-19 singles (47.4 percent). Kristen Nicely compiled a double-double: 14 markers (2 treys) and 10 boards, along with seven assists; Christa Rupple added 13 counters and eight rebounds; and Kimber Brown came off the bench for 12 (4 trios),
Jennings came out with a simple game plan: feed Landwehr. She got Kim Comden (8 markers, 7 boards) two fouls by the 6:28 mark. She netted eight points but Ayersville kept close. A 7-0 spree over the final 2:03, capped by a Schuerman putback with 3.1 ticks on the clock, pushed the Jennings lead to 17-9.
Ayervsille then switched out of its man-to-man defense and began to vary things some: a 1-2-2 half-court scheme coupled with a 2-2-1 3/4-court press. That seemed to slow down the home team. Brown’s three rainbows got them a brief 20-19 edge at the 3:50 mark but Lynzie Swartz jump-started a 14-6 closing spree in the final 3:00. A Schuerman 3-ball from the left corner at the horn capped it for a 33-26 lead.
Comden and Rupple would pick up their third fouls in the period.
Landwehr would pick up her third foul by the 5:43 mark of the third canto with her team up 37-28. Ayersville would challenge and twice get within four with her on the pine but a 7-0 closing spurt, with Landwehr putting back her own miss with 14 ticks on the clock, pushed the margin to 49-38.
Ayersville would have one more rally left in them in the finale, especially with Landwehr on the pine with her fourth foul 31 ticks in. Nicely scored eight markers as the Lady Pilots cobbled the deficit to 60-54 on her free throw with 1:10 showing. However, the hosts closed with a 5-0 fury.
Ayersville grabbed 31 caroms (13 offensive) and added 12 fouls and 15 fouls. They host Wauseon tonight.
“I’ve been saying that we’re close to where I thought we’d be this year, where we’re clicking on all cylinders and everybody is filling a role,” Myerholtz added. “Where we seem to be lacking right now is defensively. We seem to give up 50-plus points every game and that’s been a focus. It’s a matter of being in the right place at the right time.”
Jennings canned 11-of-20 free throws for 55 percent. They snatched 39 boards (16 offensive) and totaled 11 miscues and 12 fouls. They visit Lincolnview tonight.
In JV action, Ayersville was led by Raven Dotson’s 14 markers en route to a 32-19 victory.
Megan Hemker downed eight for the Lady Musketeers (4-13).
