From the Vantage Point

No winter blahs at Vantage

It’s February and exciting activities continue at Vantage Career Center. Students throughout the building have begun preparing and competing in local skills contests.

On Jan. 29, Vantage hosted the Region 16 Business Professionals of America (BPA) competitions. Four hundred and twenty-four business students from four area career centers participated in a variety of contests ranging from Digital Media to Presentation Team to Small Business Management and many more. Twenty-five high school BPA advisors and 60 judges participated in the annual event.

Trade and Industrial students also held their SkillsUSA local contests at Vantage. Students are awaiting their results. A list of students who will advance to the next level of competition will be in a future Vantage article.

“Step Into Your Future” — a workshop for girls in grades 7-9 — was held at Vantage on Jan. 27. Nearly 40 students and their parents explored nontraditional careers for women including welding, electricity, carpentry and network systems. Students had an opportunity to weld a metal “person”, build a wooden step stool, solder together a flashing LED kit and try their hand using innovative software for video game creation. It was a fast-paced morning for students to learn a few new skills!

Justin Davis, a junior Culinary Arts student from Ottoville and vice-president elect of the Vantage Interact Club, just returned from a trip to Haiti where he helped build houses and delivered items to the Borde School carpentry class.

Sophomores from the 13 schools that Vantage serves will have the opportunity to visit two Vantage programs on Feb. 6 during Sophomore Visitation Day.

Last but not least, the annual Vantage Open House and Scholarship Dinner will be held on Feb. 12 from 5-7:30 p.m. All 18 career technical labs will be open. You can meet the teachers and see the different career-technical programs available to high school students. Adult Education representatives will also be available to answer your questions about adult education classes or Wright State University courses. An “all-you-can-eat” fish and tenderloin dinner will be served from 5-7 p.m. Adults $6.50/Kids 5-10 $3.50 (Children under 5 eat free!) Tickets are available at the door.
