Velma M. Winans, 91, of Spencerville, died of a sudden illness Tuesday at her residence.
She was born Aug. 27, 1915, in Logan County, to George Ellis and Emma Jane Basil Thompson.
On May 19, 1934, she married Carrol E. Winans, who died April 22, 1999.
Survivors include daughter Janice (Dick) Miller of rural Spencerville; sisters-in-law Pearl Pollock of Haines City, Fla., and Muriel Wagner of Defiance; grandchildren Tamara (Thomas) Koenig and Michael (Kerrie) Miller of rural Spencerville; and great-grandchildren Tyler, Taylor and Tanner Koenig and India and Olivia Miller.
She was preceded in death by an infant son; sister Wilma Boyer; and brothers Adrian and Percy Thompson.
Mrs. Winans was a homemaker who held memberships with Spencerville United Church of Christ, its women’s fellowship, was a charter and life member of the VFW Auxiliary, member of the Excelsior Reading Club, was a former 4-H advisor and was a 50-year plus member and past matron (1970-1971) of the Spencerville chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star and served as its secretary. She was a 1933 Spencerville High School graduate who enjoyed her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, crocheting, sewing, square dancing and playing cards.
Funeral services will begin at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Thomas E. Bayliff Funeral Home in Spencerville, the Rev. Ronald L. Shifley officiating. Burial will follow in Spencerville Cemetery.
Friends may call from 3-8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home, where an Order of the Eastern Star service will be held at 8 p.m.
Preferred memorials are to donor’s choice.
