Ottoville loses first of season to Crestview

CONVOY— Ottoville’s 31-regular season game wining streak came to a screeching halt Friday night, as the Crestview Knights handed the Big Green their first loss of the season. The Knights defeated the visiting Big Green 58-to-36.

Losing 14-to-10 after eight minutes of play, Crestview quickly got it started offensively. Senior Colin Nedderman (13 markers) drew the foul from Ottoville’s Glen Rayman (2) 13 seconds into the quarter. Nedderman made both from the line, cutting the Big Green’s lead to two. Nedderman tied the game up 30 seconds later by making a left-side field goal.

Nedderman pushed the Knights to a four-point lead with a basket and one from the line after 6’9” senior Jason Wehri (9) fouled him.

With Wehri and senior Brandon Miller on the bench with two fouls each, and senior Austin Miller on the bench injured, Ottoville’s offense struggled in the second quarter. The Knights’ defense didn’t allow a Big Green score until Andrew Koch (4) scored two at the 4:26 mark, giving the Knights a one-point advantage.

Ottoville head coach Tom Von Sosson thought the fact that three of the team’s starters were on the bench hurt the team.

“We had Jason Wehri and Brandon Miller on the bench,” Von Sosson said. “With Austin Miller out with an injury, we had a lot of young guys out there playing.”

Ottoville’s defense at the end of the first half struggled as well. With two and a quarter left to play in the half, 5’10” senior Ben Shindeldecker (25) hit a one on the right side from behind the arc to give the Knights a six point advantage. With five seconds remaining Shindeldecker hit another three, this time from the left to send the Knights to the locker room with a 30-to-21 lead.

“Crestview made a little run in the second quarter,” Von Sosson said. “We missed a lay up that could have cut their lead to one, and then they gained momentum with three three-point goals late in the half.”

The Knights outscored the Big Green 20-to-7 in the second quarter of play.

Things only got worse for Ottoville in the second half. Another three-point goal gave the Knights a 13-point advantage.

Miller cut the lead to 11 with a lay up two minutes into the fourth quarter. Then Miller received a technical foul, sending senior Aaron Vining (3) to the line to shoot two alone. Vining made both putting the Knights up 47-to-32 with 5:41 remaining in the game.

Crestview retained the ball after the free throws and scored on the possession, giving them a 17-point lead. The Big Green would only score twice more in the game with one from behind the arc for Noah Altenburger (9) with four minutes left to play and a free throw from Wehri with two minutes showing.

“We told our guys to get aggressive and go after the ball,” Von Sosson said. “But I don’t think at that point in time it would have made a whole lot of difference. Crestview came prepared for this game and they were the better team here tonight, but we’ll learn from it and we’ll regroup.”

With the loss the Big Green fall to 6-1 on the season while the Knights improve to 7-2. Ottoville faces Minster at home on Jan. 6 for its next game while Crestview travels to Miller City on Saturday night.
